Back on the barre // De nuevo en la barra

In August 2014 I started dancing again. The doors to Ballet Estudio opened and an opportunity to study at one of Buenos Aires’ most prestigious ballet schools (Olga Ferri school of dance) became available to me. What’s more, I am training with the niece of Olga Ferri, the current director of the school: Marisa Ferri.

As many young girls do, I began dancing when I was two years old, but did not begin ballet until fairly late: the age of seven. At first I didn’t  like it, but then with time (lots of time), I began to learn about the beauty of ballet.

During my primary school years I studied with my mother until the age of 11, when I had to move to secondary school. This sent me to a local ballet school in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, the town in which I grew up. From then I trained in ISTD ballet all the way through to 18/19 years old. At the age of 20 I attempted short stints of training in Portsmouth and Mexico while at university. Since I moved to Argentina at the age of 22, I have tried to get back on the barre a few times, but to no avail.

These days I am 28 and while I have toyed with the idea of coming back to ballet for the past ten years (the point at which I took my last exam), I am finally back and hope that it will be for good.

During the course of this blog it is likely that I am to reminisce situations that occurred during the most strict years I spent studying ballet (11-18 years) between studios in Hatfield and London. I could admit to being a little frightened of what might reappear from memory lane, but I won’t. Instead, I will focus on the positive side; being able to share a fresh perspective of what it feels like to come back to the world of dance as an adult, freed of the many pressures and worries the dance world is so famous for.

As adult life can imply short-lived exercise regimes, I have begun by taking one class a week, with the hope of building up to more days of training in the future.

Join me on the journey, I will be updating the blog and promoting it through my twitter account @SoyMelaH.

Smiles and see you soon! 🙂
